clothes make the man

I just emerged from one of those endless related-image spirals at Ffffound. [*BLINKS*]
So, I couldn’t find a photo or a drawing of an ao no matter what, and the Wikipedia page is empty. PAIN. Which is compounded by the fact that in modern Japanese "襖" means "sliding screen" (with a different reading, of course). I found this nice-looking page of animuesqe drawings of medieval Japanese garments, which seems to suggest that "ao" is the general term for any number of articles of clothing which have sleeves that are separate from the front of the garment — but I don’t know if that’s true, even assuming I read it correctly, and I couldn’t bring myself to link it up.Because if it’s wrong, you know someone somewhere will eventually complain. I think I had people rising from the dead to whine that I’d missed some vital element of the metaphors inherent in Fay’s coat buttons, back in the day. Not that I’m bitter.
Anyway, I have just updated my translation of Rashoumon to accommodate Jamie’s incredible suggestions, so it is much, much better now than it was. By miles. Naked-man comics, here I come! (In a manner of speaking.)
DreamWidth keeps giving me codes, even though nobody I know wants them. Do you want them? Do you know anybody who wants them? If no one wants them I’ll post them to
dw_codesharing.
I recently started following this tumblr, because it has photos of bunnies and cakes and retarded-looking himegyaru who have voluntarily disfigured themselves with adult-sized Hello Kitty toddler rompers and circle lenses. Um. Does that title say "kanji kana mixed sentence"? Why would it say that? Is that some famous quote from a movie or something? Because that would be kind of hot.
Almost Christmas! ☃

Sara Gruen wrote Water for Elephants, a truly horrible book that is the stylistic midpoint between Dan Brown and Stephenie Meyer, and the creative amalgamation of a circus-themed multi-chapter AU fanfic and The Days of Our Lives. I think they’ve got "A Novel" appended to the title for taxonomic purposes. Otherwise, I doubt people would be able to tell. They might think it was a new kind of shoe with words on it, or something.

Date: 2011-01-05 11:36 pm (UTC)Ahahaha! It looks like all of her books are "A Novel." The synopsis certainly reads like one of those teenage-angst shows where all the actors are supposed to be 15 and look like they're 25, except this time in reverse. Either way, I think I'll save my eyeballs (and my cash) on better, actual literature. Thanks for warning me!
Re: Ao pictures
Date: 2011-01-08 02:22 pm (UTC)THOSE POOR HETEROSEXUAL MEN! WILL NO ONE THINK OF THE HETEROSEXUAL MEN? WHO SOMETIMES HAVE TO MAKE THEMSELVES SANDWICHES WHEN THEIR WIVES WORK LATE?? OR WHO COMPETE FOR JOBS/OPPORTUNITIES WITH EQUALLY-QUALIFIED LADIES AND MINORITY MEMBERS, WHO ARE OCCASIONALLY (BUT VERY RARELY) PREFERRED FOR REASONS OF DIVERSITY? IT IS A TRAGEDY.
I love it that people see the very beginnings of the repeal of white straight male privilege and react to it as though it is, you know, a campaign of victimizing evil. It only seems like a losing battle if you expect that straight white men should have the first choice of everything in the world, in the first place.
Thanks for warning me!
You are welcome.
